"Mr President, I voted in favour of the joint resolution as a principled step in the right direction. Recognition of the Palestinian State, its people and its borders is a long overdue international obligation and a positive step towards peace. Member States like Ireland must now formally recognise and must protect the space of the Palestinian State within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Palestinian recognition is established in UN resolutions and was voted on in Leinster House in Dublin last week. The Palestinian people’s right to self-determination has been enshrined in international resolutions for 66 years. Sinn Féin calls on all parties to refrain from any actions which may undermine the viability and the prospects of the two-state solution. Therefore, settlements must end, the apartheid wall must be dismantled and attacks on holy sites – along with the demolition of Palestinian property – must stop immediately."@en1
