"I voted in favour of this motion for resolution because I believe close involvement of Parliament in the development of the new internal security strategy is crucial. I find it severely disappointing that Parliament was barely involved in this process last time. The prize was paid by citizens, who were subjected to secret surveillance by Member States and external parties, with the collaboration of private companies.
Striking an appropriate balance between combatting security threats and protecting fundamental rights can be difficult, but is necessary.
Take the battle against cybercrime, which is costing the global economy nearly 500 billion dollar every year and could cause Europe to lose 150,000 jobs.
Due to a lack of transparency, citizen's calls for a renationalization of communication structures are becoming louder. But only a collective EU response will allow us to tackle cybercrime.
The lesson is that a security strategy which itself becomes a threat to people is self-defeating. We need a coordinated approach to security that deserves the trust of our citizens."@en1
