"Mr President, in October my Labour colleagues and I voted for the EU to do more of what it is good at. Since then, we saw an inspirational example of this when Philae landed on a comet. It has been compared to landing a washing machine on Burnham-on-Sea from 500 million miles away.
We have seen significant and welcome progress this year with a reversal of many of the Council’s most destructive cuts – cuts that would have hurt communities, small businesses and centres of research in my region. Unfortunately we have not seen a sufficient reallocation of funding from the CAP or from our monthly visits here to Strasbourg, a beautiful city to visit but not what you would call a good use of time and money. We want to see EU money spent on areas with real added value for our citizens and on projects that fulfil our international responsibilities. I look forward to this budget being put to that good work in 2015."@en1
