"Mr President, I was about to say that the first instinct of the legislator in a crisis is to reach for his wallet, but of course it is really to reach for wallet. Whenever we are faced with one of these catastrophic events the answer is always to spend somebody else’s money, which allows you a vicarious glow of virtue at no cost to yourself. Can I suggest something to colleagues from across the Chamber: if you feel moved by bad news of this kind, reach into your own pocket rather than into your constituents’ pockets! And I do not say that only as a rhetorical device. One of the particular catastrophes that we are talking about in this report was the floods that devastated eastern Slovenia and other parts of the Balkans in May. I was very proud a few weeks ago to lead a group of politicians from the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists doing some physical work clearing up the damage caused by those floods with our friend Ruža Tomašić, the patriotic anti-corruption MEP for Croatia. It is possible to go and do something with your own hands, rather than passing the bill to somebody else, and shall I tell you something? It makes you feel a lot better."@en1
