"I abstained from voting on Autonomous trade preferences for the Republic of Moldova because of wider implications for relations with Russia.
On one hand this motion involves the inclusion of small quantities of fruits and vegetables which can be easily absorbed in the EU and provides an opportunity to prevent instability in a country which neighbours EU member states.
On the other hand, there is a serious need to consider farmers who are already being hurt by the diplomatic failures between the EU and Russia.
We should be reminded by this threat of instability of the real and pressing need for the Commission and Council to act in a more strategic way to effect and deal with this diplomatic crisis."@en1
