"I am strongly disappointed with the Commission’s decision to withdraw the Circular Economy and air quality packages from its 2015 Work Programme. In a situation when an overhaul of EU waste and recycling laws could potentially generate up to 180 000 new jobs while saving 58 000 lives across Europe every year by improving air quality, the decision to withdraw these vital proposals is neither sustainable nor reasonable. Frans Timmermans left us with a promise that the withdrawn dossiers will be substituted with new ones, potentially easier to achieve. I worry this is a mere promise rather than the concrete delivery of results that EU citizens need. I also wonder whether ‘easier to achieve’ actually means less ambitious and that it will not address today’s problems of air pollution or unemployment. Fortunately, thanks to the mobilisation of European Socialists & Democrats, Parliament will express its discontent with Commission’s Work Programme in a resolution. We will not remain mute in the face of a European agenda based on deregulation and focused solely on the economy, with little or no space left for the concerns of the people and for the environment. The Commission is in grave danger of taking the wrong road."@en1
