"I voted in favour of the use of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) for the 608 redundant workers who lost their jobs at Whirlpool Europe in Italy. The application was made on the basis of at least 500 being made redundant over a reference period of four months in a Member State. Of these workers, 502 were involved in the primary enterprise and 106 in downstream producers. The impact of the crisis saw household consumption fall significantly in Italy and household appliances were particularly badly hit. All the workers will attend information sessions while the majority will participate in general training and retraining and avail of counselling and guidance. Employees will be able to avail of a EUR 3 000 bonus if they hire a redundant worker on a permanent contract or EUR 2 000 if this is for a fixed term contract."@en1
