"Mr President, although this vote appears merely technical, it does provide an opportunity to reflect on the EU allergens legislation which came into effect only last week – and which stands to place constraints on food and catering operators across the Member States.
The new provision requires caterers to publicly display whether the food being served contains any of a range of approximately 13 allergens. This goes far beyond communication of commonly accepted allergens, including nuts and gluten – which is vital toward protecting people in our communities.
This regulation will place an added layer of compliance checks for workers, and although exemptions are in place for voluntary, non-formal caterers, there exists a level of uncertainty on the scope and burdens of the new law.
I would strongly urge the European Commission to fill this void with effective information."@en1
