"Mr President, of course, I too celebrate the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and I condemn absolutely, without any reservations whatsoever, the horrific things going on in the world, like child malnutrition, child soldiers, child suicide bombers, forced child marriages and trafficking, and the issue of female genital mutilation, which may even still be occurring in the city of London, which I represent. Of course, we have seen the recent horrors of Boko Haram in Nigeria and ISIS in Iraq, raping and enslaving young girls with impunity.
However, there are some aspects of the resolution I have concerns about. First of all, it is the Member States, not the EU, which have primary competence here. Secondly, as a father of three small children myself, I believe that some of the issues concerning early sexualisation and gender identity give me concerns that these may be usurping my parental rights, so I abstained on this motion."@en1
