"Mr President, I really welcomed Commissioner Ansip’s initial comments when he talked about the Telecoms Council meeting tomorrow and the disappointment that we fear will be had with the result there, and I think that Parliament took a very strong position and we hope that tomorrow, the Council and the Member States will see sense. We live in exciting but technologically disruptive times. Just 25 years ago the World Wide Web was founded; just three years ago smartphones became commercially available and affordable, and technology is changing and transforming our day-to-day lives. Sadly, the Digital Single Market still remains fragmented, and not every EU citizen has access or possesses the relevant skills in order to benefit fully from what digital technologies and the internet have to offer. In my constituency of Scotland, there are still too many areas where access to fast and reliable broadband is non-existent, thus denying EU citizens access to the potential that is there within the Digital Single Market. We need an internet which is accessible and affordable to all, as well as safe to all. Wi-Fi access for everyone in every cafe and public space is not a reality in Europe today. All our connector devices use radio waves, and that is why spectrum policy and Member State coordination of spectrum policy becomes vital. We need to prepare our citizens for the opportunities of this new marketplace by providing them with digital skills as well as stimulating digital entrepreneurship. I would like to say thank you to Commissioner Ansip and that I think we all look forward to working with him in the weeks, the months and the years ahead to make this a reality."@en1
