"Mr President, global warming is costing the world more than USD 1.2 trillion a year, not to mention the human cost of climate change, which is simply unbelievable. Climate change has increased extreme weather events everywhere, including numerous examples in my region in the West Midlands. These have resulted in floods which have caused significant damage to no less than 70% of businesses over the last few years. West Midlands is also facing an increased risk of water shortages and lower agricultural productivity. The list can go on of events caused by climate change. So while the precise consequences may differ from region to region and country to country, we are all affected. That is why I voted in favour of the motion for the resolution on the 2014 Climate Change Conference. It is crucial that the EU takes a leading role during the COP 20 in Lima. This will be crucial for paving the way towards an ambitious and legally-binding international agreement for climate action, to be agreed in Paris next year."@en1
