"Madam President, may I say to the Commissioner that I welcome the proposal that we have an EU Year to End Violence against Women to acknowledge this issue. I also, Commissioner, welcome your strategy on equality between men and women to include a chapter on gender-based violence. I think that would be very important. We have all spoken here today about violence against women and asked how we can move forward in this area. One area where we can move forward is to ratify – for everybody to ratify – the Istanbul Convention. Commissioner, you said that only eight countries have ratified this Convention. My own country has not ratified the Convention. I have spoken to our Minister for Justice, and we intend to do it by this time next year, when everything is in place. We have had difficulties with constitutional rights and property rights under our Constitution when it comes to barring orders. But I think this is the single issue that is in front of us all: that only eight members have ratified the Istanbul Convention, while twenty have not. I think this is a question for us all here today. If we could do that, we would be one step forward in unifying our fight against violence across all sectors."@en1
