"Madam President, according to Mark Twain, patriotism is supporting your country all the time and your government when it deserves it. The European Union in all of this does not deserve it. It should be no surprise that I am passionately English, passionately British, passionately European, but not passionately pro-European Union. How can even the most ardent of pro-Europeans support this almighty mess? Our Parliament repeatedly voted down measures that would have saved taxpayersʼ money and helped the books to balance. In the EU budget, Parliament, the Council and the Commission are treating the issue as a political football. Yes, we talk about the victims of unpaid bills, but there is one group which is forgotten in all of this: the taxpayers, the people across Europe who have to pay for this bloated European Union."@en1
