"Madam President, if I could sum up the Europe 2020 programme so far, I think it would be with one word, and that would be ‘shambles’. If it was not such a serious subject it would be a joke. Your headline targets of 75% of 20 to 64 year olds being in employment, and of wanting 20 million fewer people at risk of poverty, are looking a little bit shaky, aren’t they? I would urge you to have a tour of southern Europe and ask how it is getting on. This top-down model of EU control backed by billions being thrown at every crackpot project you can think of is helping absolutely nobody. The money would be better spent by accountable politicians in our own countries. The UK currently gives GBP 55 million a day to the EU, while it is cutting back frontline public services and jobs. It is as an absolute disgrace, and this, added to all the red tape and bureaucracy that the EU spews out, holds back the economy and businesses from creating jobs and growth. It is the EU that is responsible for this lack of growth. But this sums up the EU because whatever it touches goes bad; its targets are missed and its rules are either broken or, even worse, ignored."@en1
