"Mr President, let me start by associating myself and our group with your words about the synagogue bombing. We are talking here about terrible death and bloodshed, and the tone in which we deal with it is really important.
Secondly, I signal that my group wants a vote on recognition but wants to achieve consensus. We have said to other groups in this Parliament that we want to be as flexible as possible and to try to assemble a big majority. To my friend and colleague Mr Preda I would say that we have had some discussions on this. He has indicated that the PPE Group currently has a set position and is not prepared to go beyond it. We all understand the sensitivities. I believe compromises are available, but the position of the PPE tonight is that recognition can only be an outcome of talks. That, in fact, is the current situation.
However, saying that this is a contribution towards the two-state solution and that peace will not be achieved without talks are, for example, possibilities. There is wording there from which we could negotiate – as the ALDE Group has said – recognising the debate and supporting the process. I believe a consensus is possible, but what concerns me – and we are delaying the vote as we speak – is that there is no indication at the moment of preparedness to look for that consensus. Therefore I would like us to go ahead with the negotiation on a text to see if we can achieve consensus.
In conclusion, we see Sweden, Ireland, Spain, the UK, and soon France, voting for recognition. Does Parliament want to lose influence by coming in at the end of that process, or do we want to shape the debate?"@en1
