"This gave me great cause for concern; there are two fundamentally competing principles at stake here. Firstly, I do not believe that politicians should be above the law. For that reason, in general I would tend to vote against defending immunity.
Nevertheless, the comments made were clearly in the exercise of her duties. I support freedom of speech; defamation in the UK is a civil rather than a criminal matter. I believe that this is the best way.
Furthermore, I call upon the Parliament at other times to adhere to its own Rules of Procedure. Under the Rules, immunity in this case should not be waived. I therefore voted to defend immunity because, in my opinion, to do otherwise would be to vote to break our own rules. I must remain consistent in my approach."@en1
