"Madam President, in 1907 a farmer from Surrey named William Willets put forward a suggestion that is so simple, yet so effective, that it has since been copied in over 70 countries around the world, including in every single Member State of the European Union. The simple act of putting the clocks forward one hour during the lighter months reduces energy consumption, increases tourism and leisure potential and reduces overall accident rates. Since 1996, the European Union has harmonised the times at which Member States have put their clocks forward and back in order to eliminate the many confusions that used to arise. I believe we should extend this period from seven to eight months, as has happened in the US and Canada, in so doing replicating the benefits that I have described for more of the year and harmonising with North American time zones at a time when transatlantic trade is on the agenda. I have asked the Commission if it will look into this and I hope to secure support from Members should any proposals be forthcoming."@en1
