"Madam President, on 7 October this year, JTI, the tobacco making company, announced the closure of its Lisnafillan factory in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, in Northern Ireland, with the loss of 900 jobs in that area – and that is only in the immediate factory, there are hundreds more jobs in SMEs, printers and haulage companies throughout the area. That closure was caused by the actions and decisions made in Europe on the second tobacco products (TPD2) packaging directive. Those jobs have been closed. Let those who made those decisions go and tell those poor people in Ballymena today what their future is. How will they pay their mortgages, how will they bring up their families and how will they look to a future? I am certainly looking to Europe to come back in and help to do the best they can through the Globalisation Fund, to do all they can for the people of Ballymena."@en1
