"Despite my earlier misgivings, I did give my support to the De Backer report on the implementation of 2014 priorities for the European Semester. I am pleased that the rapporteur included a number of crucial elements that are important to my Group: urging the rapid implementation of Mr Junckerʼs EUR 300 billion investment plan, underscoring that it is imperative to raise public investment, and highlighting the importance of rooting out poverty, precarious employment and youth unemployment. Moreover, being convinced that it is in no way helpful for Member States that are suffering because of certain budgetary rules to lose structural support, a crucial element in winning my support for the report was the scrapping of an unnecessary reference to the macroeconomic conditionality introduced in the EU Structural Funds. I staunchly believe that Member States should be allowed a certain degree of flexibility in dealing with the rules of the Stability and Growth Pact. We will not come out of the crisis, create growth and create jobs for millions of unemployed young people by implementing a pure austerity agenda."@en1
