"I voted in favour of this Commission, but that does not necessarily mean I am fully in favour of every member in every portfolio. However, the European Unionʼs model is based on compromise and I support the Commission as a whole while retaining some reservations about particular members. In particular I, along with my colleagues in the S&D Group, had serious concerns about the suitability of Mr Cañete for the position of Commissioner responsible for climate action and energy. During the hearing, we heavily questioned him on his links to oil companies and his ability to remain impartial. Mr Juncker put forward a number of concessions to ease these concerns. He agreed to our Groupʼs request to add responsibility for sustainable development to the portfolio of the First Vice-President, Mr Timmermans. It was made clear that this includes responsibility for coordinating policy on climate action and energy. In light of these concessions and supervision, we felt we could support the candidacy of Mr Cañete. Nonetheless, Labour MEPs have made it abundantly clear that we will continue to assess, not just Mr Cañeteʼs performance, but the performance of the Commission as a whole to make sure it is working in the interests of EU citizens."@en1
