"Mr President, not for the first time I feel that I am trapped in some kind of time loop here – one of those wormholes out of science fiction. The rest of Europe has moved on, but the European Commission remains resolutely trapped in the mid-1950s with Mr Juncker’s paleo-federalism, his plans for a pan-European minimum wage, a European army and police force, European taxation. What has to happen to convince European Federalists that there might be a better way? The rest of Europe has moved on but still the Eurocrats carry on chanting their ancient shamanistic incantations. It is too much integration that created the democratic crisis; it is too much integration that created the financial crisis. And yet our only response is to accelerate, to keep redoubling all of the things that led to the problems in the first place. As my countryman Oliver Cromwell once put it ‘I beseech you in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken.’"@en1
