"The principle of subsidiarity dictates that decisions should be taken at the closest possible level to the citizen - in this case, at regional or national level. Therefore these projects should not be funded by the European Union. It is absurd that the arbiters of whether this funding should or should not be given are members of the European Parliament with no detailed knowledge of the situation. This project may well be of benefit to the people of France, but I am not best placed to judge. The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund should be scrapped, which would give money back to the Member States to decide for themselves about the appropriateness of such funding. Consequently, I had no option but to vote against – even though this may be a worthwhile project."@en1
