"I support the need to have a European instrument to assist redundant workers. I am glad that Parliament fully supported the setting up of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) as part of the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2014 to 2020. I supported the Ford Genk application for the mobilisation of EUR 570 945 following the redundancies of 512 workers from the Ford plant in Genk as well as ten Belgian suppliers to the plant. Over the last number of years we have seen a large number of EGF applications on behalf of those working in the automotive industry. Given that another 7 160 redundancies approximately are due to impact the region this year, and the inevitable knock-on effects of this on the local and regional economies, the use of the EGF in the region will be essential for these workers to retrain and build upon their existing skills in order to re-enter the labour market."@en1
