"I voted in favour of the mobilisation of the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. Whilst in Brussels last week, SF’s Martin McGuinness had very positive discussions with both the Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Budget and the Head of Operations at the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. I was pleased to hear from European officials that they are ‘open’ to the prospects of Ballymena’s JTI Gallagher plant in the North of Ireland benefiting from the Globalization Adjustment Fund to assist workers facing redundancy. Martin McGuinness dFM strongly made the case that Gallagher’s clearly falls into the remit of this fund, which aims to help people who lose their jobs as a direct result of global market trends. What we were told was that the onus is on the British Government to submit a bid for assistance or to delegate responsibility to the Northern Executive to do so. Martin McGuiness will work with his colleague Peter Robinson in an effort to get a joint approach to the British Government so that the delegated authority is secured. This is an opportunity to do something tangible to help workers at Gallagher’s, and the goodwill expressed by key decision-makers in Europe must be pursued."@en1
