"I voted in favour of this resolution although I have reservations about the inclusion of the words ‘by all means’ when we are talking about how to combat this terrorist offensive. I do not believe that a large-scale, military intervention is wise or effective, but would not rule out smaller-scale assistance at the request of the Iraqis or others defending their peoples and country. I also believe a UN initiative is needed. However, the tactics of the self-styled IS (a name both condemned by many Moslems and arrogant in its claim) are designed to strike terror into the population and to remove any potential opposition or plurality. The resolution is clear in its abhorrence of IS and clear on the need to provide humanitarian assistance for those in the region and governments, the Kurdish regional authorities and settled populations under pressure due to the displacement of thousands, if not millions. It is clear on the need for the EU to do more in solidarity for refugees and it is clear on the need for an effective, inclusive government in Iraq and a political solution to the situation in Syria, which must include the region as a whole."@en1
