"Madam President, I would like to start by asking the House to join me in sending our condolences and prayers to the family of David Haines, recently murdered by ISIS, and also our hopes of a speedy return for Alan Henning, the hostage currently threatened by Islamic State. Since its rise in 2012, ISIS has been committing acts of barbarity and inhumanity not seen since Roman times: beheadings, rape, crucifixion, massacres, persecution of minorities and the imposition of a twisted variant of Sharia law typify this brutal terrorist organisation.
The simple fact is that now, through government failure to tackle home-grown extremism, Britain is now directly threatened by Islamic State. In the Middle East the West has long been seen as the ‘bad guys’, mainly due to the actions of Bush Sr, Bush Jr and Blair. However we now have the opportunity to change this by dealing with the threat of ISIS, a group that now presents a bigger risk to world security than any other single actor at this moment. It is absolutely necessary for us to act with the utmost haste to destroy ISIS on both the national and international level, and no half measures can be taken.
I am very pleased to see that the other Arab States are supporting the US-led multinational effort to stop the spread of this cancer in its tracks. It is only through cooperation that we can hope to build lasting friendships in the region, tackle these threats to world security and defeat home-grown extremism. I also call on this Parliament to vote in favour of any amendment condemning persecution by ISIS and to support national governments in their actions to tackle this problem.
