"Madam President, in all my years in this Parliament I have never seen the President allow a Member of one national delegation from one party ask a blue card of another in order to get two speeches out of one and play to a domestic gallery for political purposes. It was a clever move, Mr Etheridge, but I do not really think it should be encouraged in this Parliament. I salute your creativity in this respect.
My question to Mr Carver is a political one. He said that the enemy of your enemy is always your friend in foreign policy. Would he not agree that we in fact made a terrible mistake in 1979 in thinking that the mujahidin in Afghanistan, being the enemy of the Soviet Union, were our friend, and in backing them the CIA and the Americans backed these jihadists and we created a huge problem for the whole of the Western world. I hope that UKIP would grow up and realise that ʽthe enemy of your enemy is always your friendʼ is not actually the way we should conduct our foreign policy."@en1
