"Mr President, Ebola is not a distant threat. With Ebola cases doubling every three weeks, there could soon be an emergency here as it spirals out of control. The EU has already started to mobilise but we need to do more, and urgently. We need to prevent future outbreaks. We must boost efforts to develop treatments for Ebola and other deadly diseases. Too often these diseases are ignored by pharmaceutical companies. They cannot make money from them. That is why we must invest public money. The Jenner Institute in Oxford, working on a malaria vaccine funded by the EU, is ideally placed to work on Ebola. Today they have launched human clinical trials. This was only possible because they have the expertise through EU-supported research. Funding for this kind of research is vital. Global epidemics need to be contained quickly. We can only learn to do that through research. Training scientists and building expertise now will mean that lives will be saved next time a new disease rears its ugly head."@en1
