"Mr President, while the ongoing talks between the EU and the United States have tended to be the focus of media and political attention, the Canadian trade deal is no less significant. A number of colleagues have already touched on many of the risks and opportunities of trade deals, so I will focus mainly on the agricultural sector, which will, to a large extent, be the most affected.
I see the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada as one of the more ambitious in the agriculture sector. Local producers will derive some hope from the arrangements on cheese, and producers with recognised geographical indications (GIs) will be delighted with the increased quotas, and with the protection of the vast majority of other GIs. These are aspects of the deal which I believe the Commission should build on in future trade agreements, confidently promoting our high-quality produce on the global stage.
I had the opportunity to meet Canadian farmers recently and, believe you me, they are as concerned about this trade deal with the European Union as we are about them – and that probably goes for all trade deals that one enters into: there is always a degree of trepidation as to what may or may not happen. We should go forward with a degree of confidence and we should learn the lessons from this one."@en1
