"Madam President, I think it was a good idea by Ban Ki-moon to have the summit next week. As Commissioner Hedegaard has said, we do need some momentum because it really is ‘make your mind up time’ on climate change in the next 15 months. Will we do something, or will we simply let the problem get worse? I agree with everybody here who said that we need to go with a credible EU package – a package on our emissions for 2030, but also, as the Commissioner has said, on our finances. A few years ago, I went to northern Kenya and met pastoralists who lived in a very remote community. Those people’s lives have changed already because of climate change. Their children are going hungry now because of climate change. Their daughters were being married off younger nine years ago because of climate change. It was just before Gleneagles, and we talked about ‘Make Poverty History’ but we will never make poverty history unless we tackle climate change. That is why next week is so important. I want to ask the Commissioner – and I think President Barroso is going to New York– what we are taking there. Are we taking a package from Member States? Are we going to speak with one voice there? How is the Commission going to present in New York what the EU is doing? Lastly, I want to add my voice to everybody here who has spoken about the work of Connie Hedegaard and her commitment to climate change in the past five years. As Peter Liese said, Commissioner, there have been some very difficult moments and you always remained optimistic and always said that we would get somewhere in the end. I hope that next week we get somewhere, and I hope your optimism becomes infectious among the world leaders and that you continue to work in this area in the future. Thank you very much. I would also like to thank your staff for all the work they did."@en1
