"Madam President, rarely have I heard such a clear explanation of the state we are in as in the Commissioner’s speech. Madam Commissioner, I would like to thank you for that clarity today. Then I listened to Mr Etheridge, and his position is also clear. The problem with your position, Mr Etheridge, is that you fail to see that if we pool resources for research, we avoid duplication, and we should get much better results. Your narrow-minded approach unfortunately does a disservice to your constituents, as it does to mine. This debate has failed to acknowledge the importance of European solidarity. That is why we have a European budget. Member States benefit because they are members of the European Union and the money that is contributed, though large in its sum, is insignificant compared with the national budgets. I know we will continue to disagree with my good friend in seat 281, but I think the point is well made. We spend better if we do it collectively."@en1
