"Mr President, I voted in favour of the Saryusz-Wolski report because I believe that strengthening the relationship between the EU and Ukraine at this crucial juncture is critical. Ukraine is a close neighbour whose security, stability and prosperity are increasingly affecting the EU, as recent events have demonstrated. I firmly believe that it is the interests of citizens from both sides that we make this strong commitment to supporting Ukraine in its effort to implement deep-rooted and sustainable economic and political reform while cooperating closely on security across the region. I also believe that this agreement is instrumental in fostering a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine which respects the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Commissioner De Gucht has now announced that the entry into force of the deep and comprehensive free trade agreement (DCFTA) between the EU and Ukraine, a key part of this Association Agreement, will be delayed in an effort to avoid further escalation of the tensions with Russia. I appreciate that such a step might be necessary to contribute to de-escalation of this conflict, however, I would also like to underscore the fact that the decision by Ukraine to enter into this agreement with the EU is a sovereign one and we should not lose sight of the vital imperative of defending firmly Ukraine’s right to make such sovereign choices."@en1
