"Madam President, the Scottish whisky exports to Russia do not seem, on the face of it, very much at GBP 25 million. However, another GBP 200 million worth of Scottish whisky gets to Russia via Germany, Latvia and Estonia. It is a direct carousel. If there is any compensation going begging, Commissioner, it ought to go to the producers of Scottish whisky in Scotland and not to those who simply trade it on. As you know, the UK is a very substantial net contributor to the common agricultural policy, and some of that money coming back to Scotland would be very useful. Scotland is an important part of the United Kingdom.
There are 143 million people living in Russia. They are not going to stop eating. Food originally produced in the European Union will find its way there somehow. I urge the Commission not to obstruct these rather unofficial processes."@en1
