"Madam President, earlier this year the world was absolutely shocked by the abductions and the violence in Chibok and we saw the strong reaction from civil society in Nigeria, from people who do support education for boys and girls – for the attacks of Boko Haram are not only on girls – people who want change in Nigeria, people who want action against Boko Haram, who want accountability from their government and the conviction of those responsible for atrocities.
Obviously we express our sympathy for the friends and the families, not only of the girls from Chibok, but of all of those of different faiths who have been abducted, injured and murdered over the years by the growing violence of Boko Haram and the often violent state pursuit which has all too often substituted indiscriminate force for targeted action.
Nigeria recently became the biggest economy in Africa and we have heard about the great inequality within regions and between north and south. There is an enormous distrust of the government. Where you have that distrust you are not going to get information and people do not feel protected. A major complaint of civil society has been about the apparent absence of the government response. So we would support the action that has been taken by a number of governments in helping on Chibok, but we would hope to see a more concentrated response from the government in Nigeria in coordination with governments elsewhere."@en1
