"Mr President, first of all I would bring to your attention that we are here in Strasbourg, when as a matter of fact negotiations will take place this week in Brussels, but maybe that is our fault. I, in principle, am supportive of an agreement. However, negotiators on both sides must recognise the significant and valuable role of the European Parliament. MEPs are the most direct and discreet form of public consultation, our constituents are the ones who are set to experience the benefits or costs of an agreement, so it is extremely important that we as their representatives are meaningfully involved. From an agricultural perspective we must adopt a dual approach which recognises both the opportunities and challenges of greater market access. Our founding principle will be that TTIP must not undermine EU standards or compromise local industries. Fair trade for beef is a prime example of the necessary balance which is required; hormone-fed beef must not become the norm for our farmers, who are already under enormous pressure in the market."@en1
