"Mr President, the TTIP was a major issue during the European election campaign. I had hundreds of messages from constituents, trade unions, campaign groups and NGOs in Wales who were gravely concerned about its effects. These effects could be far-reaching and damaging – as we have heard from others – in terms of public services, food quality, the environment, health and much more. Concern is growing, but in contrast to the negotiations, which are being held behind closed doors, my group very much welcomes the European citizens’ initiative launched publicly today by over 140 organisations in 18 Member States, which demands that the negotiation mandate be repealed. One of the reasons for the disconnect between the EU and the people of Wales and elsewhere is the perceived lack of democracy and the secrecy. On TTIP we are being kept in the dark. This citizens’ initiative will enable the people’s voices to be heard, and I will encourage my constituents to support it."@en1
