"I voted in favour of this report. Dealing with invasive species, eradicating or trying to control them, costs the Welsh economy about GBP[nbsp ]125[nbsp ]million per year. That is without the revenue lost through damage to local biodiversity and the resulting decrease in the production of foods and other natural materials. It is thought that these costs amount to about GBP[nbsp ]7[nbsp ]billion in Wales. It is of utmost importance that there is an EU strategy. The other 27 Member States of the EU are our closest neighbours so it makes sense that we work on an issue that affects us all. An EU invasive species strategy would be cheaper and more effective. There would also be more rapid detection of invasive species, as Member States could contact a central point which would then alert all others of any new sightings or discoveries."@en1
