"Labour MEPs today supported ambitious measures to crack down on plastic-bag waste across Europe. Single-use plastic bags are only used for a few seconds, yet it takes hundreds of years for them to degrade – and many end up floating in our oceans and seas, poisoning wildlife. We voted for binding targets to reduce the number of single-use plastic bags we use by 80[nbsp ]%. Only binding targets will do the job – and so we are glad that amendments to water this down were not accepted. We also voted to bring in a charge for single-use plastic bags in supermarkets and other food shops. This will bring the rest of Europe in line with what the UK has already legislated to do. Wales sets a particularly good example – three years after bringing in a 5p charge for plastic bags at the check-out, the Welsh use fewer plastic bags than most other countries, and they have already met the 80[nbsp ]% reduction target that we voted for today. Labour MEPs did not support the amendment to exempt fast-food outlets from the charge, as this would be inconsistent with the laws being brought in throughout most of the UK."@en1
