"After four years of work reviewing the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, I welcome the two pieces of legislation we are voting on today. MiFID covers a multitude of topics including corporate governance, investor protection, high-frequency trading and transparency rules in all asset classes, as well as fulfilling our G20 obligations around the trading of derivative products. Proportionate and balanced legislation which allows for fair and transparent financial markets will encourage investors and businesses to trust our capital markets, allowing them to fulfil their original purpose of fuelling growth in the economy. The first MiFID is estimated to have increased EU GDP by 1[nbsp ]% because of the reduction in trading costs and the reduction in businesses cost of capital. I hope that MiFID II can be just as successful."@en1
