"This proposal amends the existing legislation on general product safety, which is considered one of the top 10 most burdensome EU laws. It covers EU safety legislation for all non-food consumer products (both new and used, except for antiques) and includes products that are used by consumers but not intended for them. It also extends to products made available to consumers through a service provider (such as a hairdryer used by a hairdresser on a consumer). The rapporteur’s amendments generally added burdensome requirements and expanded the scope. Controversial elements include mandatory origin marking on all products, which the UK is strongly against due to the burdens it would impose on businesses without sufficient evidence of any added value to consumer safety. It also bans ‘food imitating products’, creates excessive obligations on distributors and calls for an ‘EU safety testing’ marking due to the Socialists’ aim of mandatory third-party product testing. For these reasons, I voted against the report."@en1
