"I voted in favour of this report, which seeks to harmonise existing rules on official controls while ensuring they remain rigorous and fair. Measures adopted by MEPs include restoring the requirement for an official veterinarian to be present in abattoirs and cutting plants and a specific focus on evidence of fraud during inspections. Following the horsemeat scandal, it is clear that we need to crack down on those who deliberately seek to mislead consumers, so I voted in favour of stringent financial penalties for fraud. Official controls are vital for food safety, so we need to be sure that they are properly funded and not cut back as part of austerity measures. However, I believe it should ultimately be up to the Member States to determine how they finance inspections, and I voted in favour of an amendment exempting small and medium-sized businesses from fees, as I do not want to see small companies subjected to an additional cost that many will struggle to afford."@en1
