"Julie Girling MEP on behalf of the UK Conservative delegation: UK Conservatives are pleased with today’s vote result. We fought hard to ensure that the levying of fees remains a decision for Member States to make. This was crucial for us – we must be able to take account of the different systems and economic conditions in place across the EU – in terms of respecting subsidiarity. The imposition of mandatory fees would have increased costs to UK industry by GBP[nbsp ]48 million per year, with a massive administrative burden but no improvements to fairness. With regard to micro-enterprises, I am pleased to report that this is also up to Member States to decide, and even then only based on objective and non-discriminatory criteria. The narrowing of the scope to exclude plant health, seeds and pesticides is one downside and could result in different standards being applied to official controls in the same premises. An exemption for primary producers was adopted and means UK farmers won’t have to bear the costs of inspections, which they already contribute to via the CAP, alleviating a hefty financial burden for UK farmers."@en1
