"Today Labour MEPs abstained in the final vote on honey. This is a complex issue, balancing consumer rights and practical issues for bee keepers. We have consistently supported amendments which sought to give consumers the right to know whether the honey they buy is made from bees feeding on GM crops – and we are disappointed that the final agreement made with national ministers does not provide for meaningful labelling. As a result, consumers will not know whether they are eating GM honey and we could not vote in favour. However, we also did not want to vote against and support the ECJ judgment, which will be difficult to implement, especially for countries such as the UK where we have trial GM sites. British beekeepers are concerned that they may have to test their honey to prove that it does not contain GM pollen. Where buffer zones exist between GM crops and hives, as they do voluntarily in the UK, Labour MEPs think there is no need to carry out any additional tests on the honey or change labels in any way. However, as this guarantee was not written into the law, we could not give our support to either option."@en1
