"Madam President, I am here this afternoon as the chairman of the committee, not as the appointed rapporteur. Emily Turunen, who is an extremely hardworking and competent member of our committee, did a very good job of trying to reach a good compromise. But in the end, the report of the committee – which did not reflect all her views – was adopted by a narrow majority. I see from my notes that we actually had 20 people in favour, 15 against and four abstentions. Ms Turunen asked me to withdraw her name from it, which I regretted. I did try to persuade her to come and talk about the matter. As far as the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection is concerned, clearly, because of our role in the Services Directive, we are extremely sensitive to these issues. It will not surprise you to know, therefore, that there was a lot of focus on the relation between this and the ability to keep the single market moving forward, dealing with issues that have already been mentioned by the Council and Commission, identifying genuine posted workers, giving them access to information, and stepping up mutual cooperation. From our side, we feel it is really important to underpin confidence in the Services Directive with the measure which has now been put forward. That was the contribution we made, and I want to thank the rapporteur very much for considering our input into it."@en1
