"Mr President, in my three years in this Parliament I have seen clearly what David Cronin, in his book ‘Corporate Europe’, meant when he said that the majority of MEPs behave like ventriloquist dummies for big business. It is a situation where it is completely acceptable to have breakfast at breakfast events with big arms dealers. It is a situation where MEPs do not even get a slap on the wrist for putting down amendments for the US Chamber of Commerce, as an Irish MEP and his colleagues did last year. It is a situation where a revolving door exists between politicians and careers as a corporate lobbyist, as we have seen with many former Irish ministers.
It sums up the reality of two Europes: one Europe of the 1% with instant access to well-paid politicians, and another of the 99%, who get to vote once every five years and then – for the rest of the time – are told simply to accept the attacks on their living standards that are imposed. This report is on the agenda because of the hard campaigning of many activists. I call on all candidates who are standing for this election to sign up to the ‘politics for people’ pledge launched by ALTER-EU today."@en1
