"This proposal is aimed at improving transparency and comparability of fee information related to payment accounts, facilitating switching between accounts, eliminating discrimination based on residency and providing basic accounts aimed at low earners, etc. The main aims of the proposal, which has been agreed in trialogue, are acceptable to the UK which has (often through voluntary means) achieved a considerably more advanced regime than many other Member States in respect of basic banking, switching and consumer protection. However, I abstained on this report as certain aspects go much further than is necessary, given the essentially domestic nature of retail banking, and there is considerably more harmonisation on some aspects than is necessary."@en1
