"This report includes recommendations to enhance consumer protection in utility services, which cover energy and the digital sector to parcel delivery. It recognises improvements in legislation in this regard by the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and calls for enhanced consumer information, better enforcement of existing legislation, faster switching, improved transparency and comparability of tariffs. While the rapporteur had originally called for harmonised definitions of utility services and binding measures, the compromises and original draft report were significantly improved, better focused on IMCOʼs competences, and modified during negotiations with political groups due to an alliance of the PPE, ALDE and ECR. The ECR Group’s amendment to delete the socialist rapporteurʼs proposals to define utility services as services of general economic interest (SGEIs) and to delete proposals for the Commission to propose a European legal framework for SGEIs were successful. For this reason, I voted in favour of the report."@en1
