"Mr President, I would like to thank my colleague Christel Schaldemose for her work on consumer safety in our internal market, because this legislative package is a necessary improvement of our current safety legislation, which is fragmented across a number of sector-specific rules for different consumer products. Now we can have a single EU-wide regulation imposing general safety standards and requirements across the supply chain from manufacturers, through importers, to distributors. Products which pose a risk to the health and safety of consumers have to be subject to a traceability system. We are also bringing stronger provisions to protect vulnerable consumers, including children, from safety risks involved in handling certain products. The establishment of a pan-European injury database would be an important tool to identify and eliminate serious health and safety threats. Strong penalties across the board, together with thorough and vigorous market surveillance, are essential for consumer safety and confidence and help to ensure a level playing field for our businesses, protecting the competitiveness of those who comply with consumer protection rules."@en1
