"Mr President, I would like to thank all three rapporteurs for their hard work on these important dossiers. In Christel Schaldemose’s report, the need to update general product safety rules after 10 years is vitally important for consumer safety and particularly for how we protect children. For example, currently in the UK one in 10 burns in children is due to hair straighteners and I want to commend to the House the work of Electrical Safety First for their campaign on the issue, along with the Child Accident Prevention Trust. On the utilities report, the cost of living crisis is the key issue in the EU. When prices are rising but people’s wages are stagnating, families and individuals suffer when having to make decisions on whether to keep warm or buy food. It is a disgrace that the Conservatives in this House deleted a paragraph in this report on energy poverty, at a time when our citizens want to see us address these critical issues. On a positive note, I welcome more transparency in energy tariffs and hope that we will see energy companies address transparency with clearer and more comprehensive consumer information on pricing."@en1
