lpv:spoken text	"Mr President, I wanted to mention in the Chamber this evening the remarkable life and work of John Muir, the father of modern-day environmentalism. This week marks the start of the inaugural John Muir festival, a festival which marks the centenary of his death in 1914. John Muir was born on 21 April 1838 in Dunbar in East Lothian in Scotland and left when his family emigrated to America. It was through his work in America – particularly his efforts in national parks, the protection of redwood forests and his founding of the world-renowned Sierra Club, which he wrote and spoke about – that most importantly he inspired people to take care of and have responsibility for their environment. John Muir knew that, if we do not protect our environment today, we will lose it for ever. He said that everyone needs beauty as well as bread, places to pray and play, where nature heals and gives strength to body and soul alike. John Muir should be recognised in Europe just as much as in America, and I hope that together we can find some way to mark the life of this remarkable man."@en1
